What is going on?
Myelopathy is compression of the spinal cord, most often in the neck. It is different from a pinched nerve: the symptoms are subtler but more serious. Buttons and coins become clumsy, handwriting deteriorates, walking feels unsteady. Because cord compression can cause permanent damage, myelopathy is one of the few spine conditions where timely surgical evaluation genuinely matters.

In medicine, myelopathy refers to compression of the spinal cord in the neck, in the back, or in the mid back. To determine the extent and cause of spine compression, an MRI test is often necessary in cases of suspected myelopathy.
Myelopathy can only be treated with surgery known as ‘decompression surgery’. In contrast to myelopathy, which also sounds similar and relates to muscles, myopathy refers to a condition that affects the nerves. Radiculopathy, on the other hand, affects the roots of nerves as they leave the vertebral column.
Compression of the spinal cord can be caused by a variety of factors. Some patients experience a sudden onset of compression. In some situations, compression can be gradual. Compression of the spinal cord can be caused by the following factors:
- The spinal cord can be compressed as a result of some inflammatory conditions, including arthritis.
